The Irish community in Britain is sad to hear of the untimely death of Dr Rose Thompson, Nottingham. Rose and I shared concerns about the high levels of cancer in our respective communities. We were conscious of the beliefs, suspicions and experiences of care which were barriers to seeking help within the Irish and other BAME communities.
Rose brought her professional and personal knowledge about cancer in all its forms to several Irish events. Those who participated will recall how serious discussions erupted into hilarity as she passed round anatomical models of embarrassing body parts!
Others will remember Rose arriving dressed as a toilet to raise awareness of bowel cancer! Her expertise, gentle manner and good humour gave people the confidence to talk and ask questions about a previously taboo matter.
On behalf of the Irish community, we offer our condolences to her family, to B’me Against Cancer and to the wider community.
We have an Irish saying “Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís" – we will not see her like again.
Rest in peace Rose.
