Irish Community Services offer a range of services and support to members of the Irish Community living in or near South London Boroughs of Greenwich, Bexley and Lewisham.
These include five Lunch Clubs, Tea Cake Club. Elders Outreach advice and support service for members of the Irish Community who are 55 and over. Advice and Health for the younger Irish offering employment and benefit support. Dementia Support through Three Happy Days Reminiscence groups across the three boroughs. Carers Support Service for all those who care for a loved one. Cancer Self Help Group offering peer support.
Opportunity Name: Befriender
The aim of the project is to reduce social isolation for the elderly in the community. We introduce a volunteer to a client and by visiting for an hour or two a week they form firm friendships. The visits are to provide companionship for the client and for the volunteer to do what any friend might do, like having a chat over a cup of tea.
The role does not involve any domestic or personal care.
Commitment required / duration: 1 to 2 hours weekly. Ongoing
Training provided: Induction training provided
Skills required: Good communication skills and empathy are needed.
Previous experience working or volunteering with the elderly would be preferable but not essential.
