Become a Friend of Irish in Britain
Read moreThe prevalence of mental ill health and suicide is a significant issue for the Irish community in Britain. Evidence shows that Irish people are less likely to be referred for help by a GP and are more likely to reach mental health services through acute and emergency provision.
Suicide rates do not appear to be reducing as they are in the wider population and there is evidence of long–term illness relating to common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, being prevalent among the Irish community. The Covid–19 pandemic has presented additional challenges including anxiety, loneliness and other mental health issues.
As a national membership coalition, Irish in Britain is proud to lead an integrated response for positive community mental health and wellbeing. We believe that complex problems are best addressed by harnessing the experience, expertise and resources within our networks.
Through our Mental Health and Wellbeing Charter, which we launched in 2019, we are leading a cohesive community response to the mental health challenges faced by the Irish Community in Britain.
We aim to facilitate better understanding and more effective responses for our community around mental health awareness and support by providing accredited training to our membership organisations.
“I would definitely recommend the Mental Health First Aid course. It is instructive, helpful and equips you to help others experiencing distress. It should be mandatory for all of us” Danny Maher CEO Ashford Place
“The MHFA is already proving to be very helpful for supporting complex clients – it has given me a lot of confidence to address very difficult and ongoing mental health issues empathetically and supportively, while always emphasising the need for professional help” Maura Kennedy Irish Community Care Merseyside
